You don’t need all the answers.

A few gentle starting points for navigating a difficult time. This is general guidance; your doctor, local authorities and funeral director can advise on your situation.

Talk through your options
01

When someone has died

If the death was expected, contact the doctor or healthcare team caring for them. For an unexpected death, or if you are unsure whether someone has died, call 111 and follow their instructions.

02

Give yourself a little space

Once immediate medical needs are addressed, contact someone you trust. You do not need to make every funeral decision straight away. Ask a funeral director which steps are time-sensitive.

03

Preparing for a conversation

It can help to note your loved one’s wishes, the location of the death, and who will be involved in decisions. A funeral director can explain documentation and registration requirements.

04

Looking after yourself and your whānau

People grieve differently. Accept practical help, take breaks, and reach out to someone you trust. If you feel overwhelmed, your GP can help you find support.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

Start with a conversation. We’ll take it from there, together.
